Essential Oils and Diffusers, a Beginners guide

Sharing is caring!

I must admit I was a little behind in the times when it came to essential oils, diffusers and aromatherapy. I suffer with chronic sinus problems and about a year ago, a friend suggested to get an essential oil diffuser. She told me she has been using them all over her house and her sinus problems have become more bearable. If you are new to oils and diffusers, keep reading for help in getting started. Since I have discovered essential oils and diffusers, I now have many of them all over my house.

My search for essential oils and diffusers

I began researching and came across an article that described the health benefits from aromatherapy, it was very eye opening. Another article I came across was how essential oils can help with sinus congestion. In addition to helping with sinus problems, essential oils and diffusers are great for relaxation and sleeping. Not only are the health benefits wonderful, they can also make your home or office smell amazing.

What are Essential Oils

Essential oils are concentrated extracts from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and bark of plants to capture the plant’s essence. Basically, they are the compounds that give plants their distinctive smell.

How they work

Essential oil diffusers are devices that are used to disperse essential oils into the surrounding air. When you fill the diffuser with water and add an essential oil into the diffuser it releases a fine mist of essential oil and water
into the air so that you can easily inhale the scent.

Picking your Diffuser

There are many different types and styles of diffusers on the market and they range in price, from affordable to a splurge, it all depends on your needs and preferences.

There are four main types of diffusers, including nebulizing, ultrasonic, heat, and evaporative diffusers. The most popular type of diffuser is the ultrasonic essential oil diffuser.

Choose your oils

There are many different scents to choose from, each with their own benefits. Some of the most popular oils used in diffusers are lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, orange, lemon, tea tree and grapefruit. To help you understand the benefits, below are the categories with the most popular scent.

Sinus Congestion: Peppermint, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus
Relaxation and Sleep: Lavender, Chamomile and Ylang Ylang
Inspiring: Lemon, Peppermint and Orange
Fresh: Orange, Lemon, Lime and Lavender
Keep an Illness at Bay: Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Thyme, Lemon and Grapefruit

I recently discovered this scent that has been so helpful with my sinus problems. I have already used 4 bottles, it’s that good.

The above are just some to get you started. You can mix your own to come up with your favorite scent.

Pouring into Diffuser

Enjoy your Diffuser

Now that you have your diffuser and essential oils, you can start enjoying them. If you went with the ultrasonic essential oil diffuser, you will just add water to the reservoir of your diffuser, there will be a fill line so you don’t overfill, add a few drops of your essential oils and take in the scent. Remember, essential oils are very potent so start with three or four drops, you can always add more if needed.

Keep in mind that some oils are too strong for children and should not be used in a diffuser if you have kids.

Some essential oils are toxic to cats and dogs so be extremely careful which oils you are using if animals use the same room. If you have pets, please do your research before using your essential oils.

We hope this helped you to get a better understanding of essential oils and diffusers. We would love to hear your favorite scents. If you have a recipe you love, please share it in the comments below.
